CAHPS for Accountable Care Organizations (ACO) Surveys

The CAHPS Survey for Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) lets ACOs participating in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) Medicare Shared Savings Program and Pioneer ACO Model meet their requirements to measure the patient experience of care. The primary goals of this survey are to:

  • Measure the performance of organizations participating in the Shared Savings Program and Pioneer ACO Model.  Under these programs, ACOs are eligible to get a portion of the savings that accrue to Medicare if the ACO meets both program requirements and quality performance standards.

  • Help ACOs improve quality of care and services by giving them information on their performance as well as information on the experiences of beneficiaries in other ACOs and beneficiaries who aren’t seen by ACOs.

The surveys are administered following a mixed-mode data collection protocol that includes a pre-notification letter, two survey mailings and up to six follow-up phone call(s) to non-respondents. The 2015-2016 data collection schedule (for the 2015 reporting period) will begin in November 2015.

CMS has re-approved Metrix Matrix as a returning CMS CAHPS for ACOs Survey vendor for the 2015-2016 survey administration period.
